From Windsor to Ararat Gardens: A New Chapter in 2023
The Glendale campus has a long history. It operated for decades as the Windsor life plan community and had been part of the HumanGood family of nonprofit senior housing since 1937. In mid-2022, Ararat Home of Los Angeles announced an agreement to purchase the community, and the deal was completed on March 1, 2023, when Ararat Home took ownership and began operating it as Ararat Gardens, with the skilled nursing side renamed Ararat Post Acute. Ararat Home's leadership had explored a stronger Glendale presence for years, and the acquisition brought a new nonprofit steward to a well-established campus.
A Nonprofit With a Mission
Ararat Gardens is part of Ararat Home of Los Angeles, a nonprofit founded in 1949 by a group of Armenian Americans. The organization's stated mission is to provide senior living care regardless of an individual's financial status and to promote Armenian heritage and culture in the United States. Ararat Home operates communities across three campuses in the region and provides a home for more than 500 residents. Because it is mission-driven rather than purely commercial, the organization frames its work around the dignity and well-being of the people it serves.
A Full Continuum of Care on One Campus
The defining feature of a life plan community is that different levels of care sit together, so residents can move between them as their needs change without leaving the campus.
Independent Living
Independent living at Ararat Gardens offers residences with gourmet dining, a curated calendar of events, and wellness amenities. The independent living program has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Independent Living community for 2022-23.
Assisted Living
Assisted living adds support with the activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, with private residences that include full baths, individualized care plans, transportation assistance, and access to the community's amenities. Residents can transition to a higher level of care as their needs evolve.
Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation
Ararat Post Acute provides skilled nursing and short-term inpatient rehabilitation, with private suites, 24-hour skilled nursing, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy delivered by licensed staff. It serves both Ararat Gardens residents and people admitted directly from the community, and it has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for short-term rehabilitation and nursing care.
Residences and Floor Plans
Ararat Gardens offers a range of residence types across its levels of care, including studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, and cottages. Independent living floor plans include studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and cottage layouts, while assisted living offers studio and one-bedroom options. Skilled nursing is arranged in private suites with full baths.
Amenities and Daily Life
The campus is set on beautifully landscaped grounds with flowering gardens, patios, and courtyards. Indoor amenities include a billiard room, a library, a movie theater, a fitness room, an arts and crafts room, and a hospitality room, along with a beauty salon, a barbershop, a laundry room, and a gift shop. Dining is served in a dining room with chef-prepared menus that range from gourmet dishes to comfort foods made with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and there is a community gathering area and a refreshment bar. The community is pet-friendly, and services include Wi-Fi, basic cable and utilities, weekly housekeeping, 24-hour security with an emergency call system, and a calendar of educational and fitness classes and social gatherings.
Health Support and Care Coordination
Because Ararat Gardens keeps several levels of care on one campus, residents can access more support as their health changes without a disruptive move. In-home care is available at an additional cost for residents who want extra help in their own residences. Families who prefer to keep routine medical visits close by can also select a physician who sees patients on-site, which helps with medication reviews and follow-ups without a trip across town.
Location in Glendale
The community occupies almost a full city block in a quiet residential neighborhood of Glendale, near Adams Square, with convenient access to downtown Glendale as well as Pasadena and Los Angeles. Glendale is home to a large Armenian American community, which keeps many residents close to family, familiar shops and restaurants, and the medical resources of the region.
Learning More and Weighing Options
Families can learn about tours, residences, and availability through the Ararat Gardens website. If you are comparing communities or are unsure which level of care fits a loved one, a placement service that helps families sort through senior housing can offer guidance at no cost. Starting the conversation early tends to make the whole process calmer.
