The National Institute on Aging (2024) recommends visiting more than once, at different times of day, and watching how staff interact with residents rather than with you. Ask about staff training in dementia care specifically, and about turnover.
Ask what happens on a bad day: how the team responds to someone who is frightened, refusing care or trying to leave. Ask it plainly and listen for a concrete answer about people and routine rather than a general statement about compassion.
